Although we are officially on summer break now, it might be worth it to come back and borrow Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts for a little summer reading.

This book may old and out of print, but it is one of the best I’ve ever seen to make the world of classical music more interesting and accessible to the average listener.  Simple and funny enough for a 10 year old, but comprehensive enough for an adult, the book contains essays by the famous conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein along with humorous drawings and written out musical examples.  Ten chapters cover topics such as “What is a Melody?”  “Humor in Music” and “What Makes Music American?”.  It is a great one to read before going to a symphony concert, or before writing a report about music for school.  I hope you borrow it soon!
